Importance of Detoxing in Recovering from Substance Abuse

Detoxing is the process of removal of any alcohol, drugs, or other substances from the body of an individual. Most addictive substances have a strong impact on the body, and our body has a tendency of becoming reliant on their presence. The most difficult aspect of addiction is the reliance and lack of functioning many addicts face when alcohol is not provided to them. They seem unable to work or function without the substance if they have grown used to its presence in their body.

To recover from substance abuse, the human body must become used to being in its natural state. It must become used to being in a state where it is not relying on any external substances for day-to-day functioning. The process must go from detox to rehab and it is the first step. Different substances affect the body differently, but most affect the neurotransmitters in the brain. It is due to this interference that the body gets the euphoric sensation associated with a drug high.

To stop the consumption of these substances, it is important to remove them from the system and the body. This is not an easy process. Substances cause dependency, and this dependency can be incredibly strong. The body develops a very clear need for these substances and is unable to function normally without them. So when the body is deprived of these substances, it tends to react very viscerally and very obviously. If the drugs are absent, the withdrawal symptoms would begin.

If you have a loved one who is suffering from substance abuse and is wanting to make a change, this is the most difficult step of this process. They will suffer from the following symptoms and will have a very difficult time:

  • Shaking
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach Cramps
  • Sweating
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability

The most difficult of all these symptoms would be the depression, anxiety, and irritability an individual would suffer through, as they would have regular mood swings through the entire process. They may go from anger to sadness in a span of a  few minutes. This detox process can be painful, but it is necessary for the substances to be removed from the body and for the body to fully heal itself.
